Carol Whiteside Lecture: "Making Room for California's Future: Why the Central Valley Matters" Carol Whiteside is the President of the Great Valley Center , an organization she founded in August 1997 to promote the economic, social and environmental well-being of California 's Central Valley, from Redding to Bakersfield . In eight years, the Center initiated and has run more than a dozen programs designed to increase and improve the capacity of the region. Programs included leadership development, technology training, agricultural land conservation and economic development. Whiteside served as the Director of Intergovernmental Affairs in the Governor's Office, working on issues of land use, finance and restructuring, and economic development. She also served as Assistant Secretary of the California Resources Agency where she specialized in resource conservation, land use and growth management. She has been a recognized leader in local government organizations and a consistent advocate for regional decision-making, Carol served as a Director of the Lincoln Institute for Land Use in Cambridge Mass, and is a founding Board Member of the California Center for Regional Leadership. Carol served on the Modesto City Schools' Board of Education, the Modesto City Council, and was elected Mayor of Modesto in 1987. She is a graduate of the University of California at Davis. |
